How to remove vocals from a song.
Four free ways.

There are four common ways to take the vocals out of a song without paying. The old tricks work on a few songs and fail on most; AI separation works on almost any song. Here is what each one does.

1. AI vocal removal

A model trained on a large amount of music separates the voice from the instruments, wherever the voice sits in the mix. The bass, drums and stereo width stay. Open the vocal remover, choose your song, listen to the music on its own and download it.

2. Audacity's vocal reduction

Audacity's Vocal Reduction and Isolation effect removes sound that is the same in both channels. Lead vocals are usually mixed in the centre, so they get quieter, but so do the bass, kick and snare, and the reverb on the voice stays. It works best on older stereo recordings with a dry vocal.

3. Phase cancellation by hand

Invert one channel and mix the two together: anything panned dead centre cancels out. It is the same idea as Audacity's effect, done by hand in any editor, with the same problems. The result is mono, and the bass goes with the voice.

4. An official instrumental or karaoke version

Many singles and albums come with an instrumental, and karaoke companies sell licensed versions. When one exists, it is the cleanest option of all.

Which one should you use?

Almost any song: AI separation keeps the music whole and takes out the voice.

An old stereo recording with a dry, centred vocal: Audacity can be enough.

A song with an official instrumental: use that.

Can a chat assistant remove vocals?

Chat assistants work with text and images; they aren't built to separate music. Use a separation tool instead.
