Dubbing and voice-over · Updated 20 October 2026

The dialogue out.
The music and effects kept.

A music and effects track, or M&E, is everything in a soundtrack except the voices. Dubbing and voice-over need one, and finished videos often come without it. AI voice separation can make one from the final mix.

If the original project or the stems exist, use those: they are always cleaner than separating a finished mix.

Make the M&E track

  1. Choose the finished video or its audio. Use the highest-quality export you have. A file over 20 minutes is done in parts of up to 20 minutes and joined back together.
  2. Open the voice isolator. It splits the soundtrack into two tracks: the voices, and everything else.
  3. Listen to the background track. That is your M&E: music, effects, ambience and crowd sound, with the dialogue taken out.
  4. Download both tracks as WAV. Keep the dialogue track too: it is a useful guide for timing the new voices.

Check these moments

Effects that sound like voices: shouts in a crowd, breaths and some foley can land on the voice track. Listen to busy scenes on both tracks.

Singing: a song with vocals counts as voice. If the characters sing, decide scene by scene which track that part belongs on.

Dialogue under loud music: faint traces of a voice can remain in the M&E. Mixed under the new dialogue they are usually covered; listen before you deliver.
